Although we announced the formal partnership with CD Baby last month, they went live with the sync opt-in 10 days ago. The result was pretty resounding, with hundreds of thousands of tracks in the first week added to the 500,000 track Rumblefish music catalog. The Rumblefish catalog is the largest collection of songs that can be legally edited into online videos and UGC in the world.

What does this mean?

  1. CD Baby artists have access to a totally new revenue stream. They now will receive royalties through soundtracks licensed for use in online videos, slideshows, presentations and other UGC using the Rumblefish API, Friendly Music and the Music Licensing Store.
  2. Consumers and professionals can add soundtracks from some of the top indie artists into their videos, slideshows, presentations, advertisements, films, games and much more.
  3. Online destinations, like YouTube, that offer up Rumblefish’s songs from their website can now give users access to a larger variety of songs.

The CD Baby partnership is now fully live and we’re seeing the fruits of our labor!

The video has gone viral in a huge way and has hit 7 million+ views since it was posted a few short weeks ago on January 12th!

New Numbers Say Yes.” For the first time since 2004, overall music sales are up. Sales aren’t up much (1.4%), but it’s been eight years since sales have been up, at all. A great sign, regardless of your measure. Also, 2012 is already shaping up to see huge focus on live shows/merch & sync licensing as new focus areas of growth for artists and labels. This is going to be one exciting year for the music industry.

Today we announced a partnership that’s been in the making for some time: CD Baby. It’s great to do a deal in the music industry with another Portland company, but we’re way more excited than just that. CD Baby has 250,000 artists with 3.5 million tracks. The company just announced more than $200 million has been paid to their artists in royalties. With partnership between Rumblefish and CD Baby, their artists can now choose to create a new income stream in sync licensing. Rumblefish international partner Songs To Your Eyes Ltd., which is based in Israel, has secured the placement of some of Rumblefish’s catalog in some local TV commercials in that territory.

Rumblefish artists Bell Plaines and Supabeatz both achieved placements for this past 3rd quarter 2011 with “Strange Season” and “Sexo Perfecto” respectively.

Congrats to them both and stay tuned as Rumblefish expands into more and more international territories!

We’ve decided to spotlight a Rumblefish artist each month in a video blog post entitled TANKED.  We were fortunate enough to have Jim Fairchild of All Smiles (also of Grandaddy and Modest Mouse) join us for our Friday Afternoon Meeting.  We caught Jim and fellow musician, Davey Brozowski, just before they headed out to Brazil by way of Austin while playing with indie-rock stalwarts Modest Mouse.  Tanks again, fellas!

Jim’s band, All Smiles, somehow manages to be both anthemic and intimate, serving up close to 100 tracks, including instrumentals, in the Rumblefish catalog. All are available for sync licensing. If you’re interested in getting some of his music, email us at licensing@rumblefish.com!

Rumblefish is hard at work getting our hustle into Hollywood, and our latest placement is Rumblefish artist The Diplomats of Solid Sound into the film “50/50″, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen.

“50/50″ is a film inspired by a true story, and is a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy (Gordon-Levitt) who learns of his cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.

The song “Soul Connection” was used in the film, and we are glad that our catalogue continues to provide the soundtrack to Hollywood and beyond.
